I have only just recently had the time read up and to give the Mill Park Secondary College Challenge a try. Visiting classes does take some effort but it allows us to see “other types of learning” in action.
I haven’t ventured far from the Technology area as yet. Visiting classes within my own Technology faculty I have again realised that we really do have a very specialised area with talented and hard working staff. In Technology students are out of their seats collecting equipment, asking for assistance, watching demonstrations, producing practical articles and are exposed to unfamiliar technologies.
During my visits I have been able to see some excellent learning strategies in use.
I have visited new staff member Cameron Ross in action in T2 with
a Year 7 group as part of the challenge. After packing up all work and equipment
in the room Cameron gave the students a quick quiz. It was a Numeracy game just
short sharp questions, maths problems, measurement questions all randomly
asked-the students were all very eager to answer correctly. I thought that this
was an excellent way to finish a lesson. Well done Cameron!
I also visited Karen Szitarity at the Senior Campus. Karen has a
new strategy of asking the students to reflect on the previous lesson by writing
in their journals at the beginning of the next lesson.
I enjoyed popping in to both of these classes and am eager to ‘borrow’ ideas from both of my colleagues.
I am looking forward to finding the time to complete a few more challenges in the weeks to come.
The Technology Faculty at MYC looks forward to visitors over the coming weeks – all welcome!
